UNIFY CORPORATION, IN COOPERATION WITH THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, ANNOUNCES BREAKTHROUGH SOFTWARE LICENSING AND REGISTRATION PROGRAM

SAN JOSE, Calif., August 26, 1996 -- Unify Corporation (NASDAQ: UNFY), in cooperation with the government of the Peoples Republic of China, today announced a breakthrough software licensing and registration program. The program is the first significant software industry development to be announced following the recent Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) trade negotiations between the United States and the People's Republic of China (PRC). Working with various PRC ministries and administrations, and in consultation with the Beijing office of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Unify is implementing a software registration program under which users can register their previously unlicensed software. Unify is a leading supplier of advanced application development tools for high-end, business-critical client/server applications for intranets and the Internet, and database software.

"Unify's licensing program is an excellent model for software companies doing business in China," said Robert Bannerman, Commercial Attachi for the U.S. Department of Commerce in Beijing. "We will support Unify and its efforts to implement advanced software technology in the PRC while insuring that the software used within the country is properly licensed."

"We have worked closely with the Chinese government to create a method for opening the vibrant Chinese market to U.S. software companies," said Reza Mikailli, president and CEO of Unify Corporation. "Because of our business relationship with the PRC, we were able to develop a fair and equitable program that will be a model which can be used as the country significantly expands its information technology capabilities. This breakthrough program is just the first step in what we believe will be a very important and long-term relationship for Unify and our customers in the PRC."

Unify has created a new organization, chartered with growing strategic relations in China. Through this new organization, Unify will assist the central government to quickly harness the power of the Internet and Intranet by providing key government ministries and administrations with Unifys market leading products including Unify VISION and VISION/Web and on-going technical training. The new organization is headed by Roland Tseng, Director, Pac Rim. Tseng has more than 10 years experience conducting business in the PRC.
